How To Stock Your Pantry The Clean Way

The right foods not only help you maintain a healthy weight, but they also help maximize your life as you age. Although most people know the benefits of eating a healthy diet, many struggle to do so.

The cause may be staring you in the face every time you enter your kitchen: the pantry. Knowing how to stock your pantry is the best way to stick to healthy eating habits.

What Should I Eliminate From My Pantry?

The first step toward healthy eating is to get rid of any food items that may tempt you. Take a look at the list below for things you should toss out or donate.

  • Food Containing Trans Fats - Any food label that lists a “partially hydrogenated” oil means that food contains trans fats. However, not all food made with trans fats say so in the ingredient list, so it’s also important to get rid of things like microwave popcorn, cake mixes, many packaged sweets, non-dairy creamer and some crackers.

  • Junk Food - This ranges from sugary snacks, to chips, to sweetened cereals. If something is full of added sugar or salt, get rid of it! Sometimes these unhealthy culprits can be disguised as healthy snacks, like canned or dried fruit. Some packaged fruit is OK, just check the label for added sugar.

What Should I Add to My Pantry?

Just as it’s important to get rid of unhealthy foods, it’s also important to set yourself up for success by stocking your shelves with healthy options. You’ll need something to snack on when that undeniable midnight craving overwhelms you. Here’s a list of just a few pantry must-haves.

  • Beans - Packed with protein and fiber, beans are great for a variety of meals and snacks. They’re extremely versatile and give you many options without derailing your efforts.

  • Nuts and Seeds - Almonds, pecans, walnuts, and other types of nuts and seeds make a healthy, filling snack. They all contain healthy fats, fiber, and protein so you can munch without feeling guilty.
