Start Thinking Of Your Food As Medicine

Eating is a part of our everyday lives. While food staves off hunger, provides energy, and brings us pleasure, it also provides us with the nutrition we need to help our body stay healthy and fight illness.

Why Focus On What You’re Eating?

All too often with diets and calorie counting, we focus not on what we should eat, but what we should avoid. While avoiding certain foods is important to our health, it is just as important that we focus on eating a variety of healthy food to make sure that we are getting all the required nutrients our body needs.

These nutrients help:

  1. give us energy
  2. boost our immune system
  3. repair damage in our body
  4. and keep our organs functioning properly

What Types Of Food Should You Eat?

It is important to eat a variety of foods, drink lots of water and eat a decent portion of each of the following to help keep your body well and able to fight illness:

Fruits and Vegetables - Dietary recommendation is to eat five to thirteen servings of fruit and vegetables per day. Fruits and vegetables provide us with a large portion of the vitamins and minerals we need, help prevent cardiovascular disease, and promote good bacteria in the digestive track to keep our gastrointestinal system functioning efficiently.

Lean Proteins - Consuming at least two servings a day of lean protein will help boost metabolism and give you energy to get through the day. Protein also helps with wound healing, muscle, joint, and bone health, and helps to boost the immune system.

Whole Grains - Choosing whole grains for our carbohydrate choices is important as much the nutrition is stripped away during processing. Whole grains provide the fiber we need to maintain a healthy gastrointestinal system and can also help reduce the risk of diabetes and heart disease. Whole grains can provide a large percentage of our daily needs for many vitamins and minerals.

Healthy Fats - While fat is often on the list of foods we are told to avoid for healthy living, there are essential good fats that our body needs to maintain its health. Omega-3 fats that come from plant oils, olive oils, nuts, seeds, and some fish help to work as an anti-inflammatory in our body. Keeping inflammation reduced in the body can help our immune system battle illness.
