Where To Get The Best Produce In Amarillo

While there's no single diet that's suitable for everyone, there's no denying that whole food nutrition has a positive impact on anyone's health. Fresh produce is a major part of a diet built on whole foods, but shopping for it can get tricky. There are a variety of places in Amarillo where the produce is always fresh.

Bountiful Baskets Food Co-Op

Started in 2006 by Tanya Jolly and Sally Stevens, Bountiful Baskets is a grassroots, all-volunteer, no-catch cooperative that offers fresh produce at a very low price ($15 per basket).

Each BBFC basket holds a variety of produce — typically half vegetables and half fruit — that are valued at $40 to $50.

To participate, you need only to go to the Bountiful Baskets website and pay for how many baskets you want. You can then pick up your basket every other Saturday at the AgriLife Extension center at 6500 W. Amarillo Blvd. For an additional $10, participants can make their items organic-only.

Golden Spread Farmers Market

It's often been said that the healthiest food is that which is grown locally. The Golden Spread Farmers Market is a cooperative of Texas Panhandle farmers, most of whom are located within 70 miles of Amarillo.

All produce is harvested on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and brought to the market the next morning. As Golden Spread board member Ronnie Kimbrel put it in a recent news article, the only way to get food any fresher is "to grow it yourself."

The market opens at 7 a.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and remains open until all of the produce has sold out.

Natural Grocers

Located in the Summit Shopping Center, Natural Grocers is part of a chain of 90 stores based on five principles: nutrition education, highest quality products, affordable pricing, commitment to the community, and commitment to its employees.

Natural Grocers prides itself on its nutritional education resources, which include nutritional health coaches, health and wellness experts, and a resource room available at most of its rooms.

Market Street

Market Street began under the premise that shoppers wanted to find high-quality whole foods without have to run all over town to find it. It's a one-stop shopping experience that meets customers' everyday grocery needs while providing whole health products, and freshly prepared foods. Gourmet and specialty items are available, as well.

Locally-grown and organic produce is at the foundation of everything Market Street does, as is exceptional customer service.

Matrix Age Management of Amarillo provides a proactive program that stops the downward spiral of aging and brings people back to their pinnacle of health and happiness.
